Voter Registration Deadline

Elections officials are reminding Rhode Islanders that the deadline for new voters to register for the September party primaries is Sunday, Aug. 14.

Registration forms are available at the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s website; they may be printed, completed and submitted to local canvassing offices.

While there will be no council or School Committee primary contests in Newport or Middletown, Republican candidates Richard Rom and Amy Veri will face off in state Senate District 12 to determine who will go up against Democratic incumbent Louis DiPalma in November’s general election.

Voters in House District 72 will be asked to choose between two Democratic candidates in the primary, as James J. Cawley and Linda D. Finn vie for the opportunity to face Republican Kenneth Mendonca in November. Incumbent Daniel Reilly, of Portsmouth, decided not to seek re-election in 2016.

At the federal level, First Congressional District incumbent David N. Cicilline is facing a challenge from Christopher F. Young in the Democratic primary, with the victor facing Republican Harold Russell Taub in November.

Anyone missing the deadline for the primary may still register by Oct. 9 for the general election.
